The Proof Is In The Reading

The Proof Is In The Reading

This week, I surprised Hunter with the proof of Pirate Penguin!

See the video here

He was so excited to see his story realised in an actual book, with his name on the cover!

I was relieved.

So much goes into creating a picture book, and no matter how many hours you spend looking at the digital versions on screen, it's never as good as the physical printed copy.

I'm happy about 2 things:

  1. That we got the proof sorted months before we need to print the main run. Having a good amount of time to look through the proof helps to spot any final changes we need to make. It also means we can send copies to other authors that will share on their social media.
  2. That I hired Nicci. Not only is she an amazing illustrator, but she also really knows how layout and composition works. When a book is printed, cut and bound, there is a risk of pictures getting 'lost' in the gutter ( the middle bit between the two pages) or the font size doesn't read well.

Fortunately, I've only spotted a couple of (minor) changes, and the book looks incredible. Unlike with print on demand services, we were able to choose the highest quality paper and ink so the colours really pop on the pages. We also have the most gorgeous endpapers!

If you haven't already pre-ordered (Arrrrggh!) please do! Ideally we are looking to hit 250 pre-orders before going to print in September. This will make a huge difference for us so if you have been thinking of getting a copy - do it now!
